People are afraid to make a decision about something because they are not sure if they are making good decisions. How can you know if you are making good decisions in business and life or you making bad decisions?
First of all, what is a “Good Decision”? How can you know if you made a good decision or bad one? For most of the people, a good decision is when the result of the decision is positive and it happens soon after you make that decision.
To be honest, you can’t really tell if you are making good decisions or a bad one because a decision is kinda neutral.
Let’s see this in practice. For example, you need to make a decision on going to a business meeting or to go meet an old friend because he is in town at the same time when the business meeting happens.
Maybe for you, it’s an easy decision and you will choose………. yeah what would you choose?
a) you can go to a business meeting, network with other business owners, have a nice chat and coffee. You might get some business from this meeting but you are not sure about it when you leave the house.
b) you can go meet your old friend because you didn’t see him/her for years and you have no idea what he/she is doing for living now. You can have a great time and maybe he/she knows people that could do a business with you. Again, you don’t know it before you meet him/her.
So you can go to a business meeting and get some leads or you can go meet an old friend and maybe you can get something more exciting than just leads.
You can’t because you don’t know the end result of your decisions. Even you make a “poor” decision it can lead to something great in the future.
When you make a decision and the result of it is negative now, it doesn’t really mean that the decision was bad.
Let’s take a look at some not business situation. You meet a guy or a woman and you guys are together for 5 years. Then something breaks between you two and you guys break up. Often people say that being a couple with that person was a bad decision but then because you were with him or her for that 5 years you met the whole family of that person and your ex’s sister has a friend who becomes your wife or husband. When we take a close look at this there is very low chance that you would meet your lifetime partner if you didn’t get together with your ex first.
Maybe all decisions are good? Because a “bad” decision or a “good” decision changes the path of your life and it always links to something else.
My suggestion is to stop worrying about making good decisions, instead of worrying about it just make a decision. Your life could be totally different if you just stop being worried and stop yourself from making small or big decisions.
The issue here is that many people are so afraid of making bad decisions and worried of how to manage to be making good decisions that they don’t decide anything at the end. They can’t decide blue shirt or white shirt so they choose to not to go to the party. Of course, those are very simple decisions and life will bring you some hard situations where you need to decide something big, but if you don’t learn how to make small decisions quickly how can you make a bigger decision?
Stop being scared of making choices and just make them. Try to focus on the future and think about what kind of “links” could be made based on the next decision you make but don’t spend too much time thinking of if this decision is good or bad because you will never know. Maybe when it will come to the end and you will be reviewing all your life, maybe then you can tell that was a good decision or bad one, but if you still have a life to live at least next 15 years you can’t really tell if the next decision you make is bad or good.
I am curious what decision would you make about the “going to a business meeting or meeting old friend” situation. What would you do and why? If you are willing to share your opinion please write a comment below and let me know what kind of decision you would make.
